Found a perfect Cursor skill on GitHub. The README says one line: npx skills add. I run it, open Cursor... nothing. Where did the files even land - .cursor/rules? ~/.cursor? Nobody explains the path, and every tutorial assumes you already know.

Copied the skill files into my project and Cursor's agent just ignored them. Turns out they belong in .cursor/rules/ AND you have to restart. Then my legacy .cursorrules fought with the new .mdc rules all evening. Installing a skill should not be an archaeology project.

Search 'cursor install skill' and you get a dozen tutorials - half about extensions, half about MCP servers. Skills are neither. A skill is a SKILL.md methodology file your agent reads. Once you get that, everything clicks. Until then, pure pain.

FAQ
Q: Is installing a Skill in Cursor the same as installing an extension?
A: No. Extensions live in the VS Code plugin system and change editor features. Skills are SKILL.md methodology files installed into .cursor/rules/ or a local skills directory - they change how your Agent behaves. terminal-skills writes skills directly into .cursor/rules/ via npx terminal-skills install; restart Cursor and they're live.
Q: Where does npx skills add actually put the files?
A: Depends on the installer and target agent. The skills.sh ecosystem's npx skills add writes per-agent directories - for Cursor usually .cursor/rules/. manage-skills installs into a central cross-agent library and syncs to Cursor from there. If files go missing, run the installer's list command to verify paths.
Q: My skill installs but Cursor ignores it. What now?
A: Check three things in order: path (is the SKILL.md inside .cursor/rules/ or your skills dir?), restart (Cursor only loads new rules on restart), and conflicts (legacy .cursorrules fighting new .cursor/rules/*.mdc files). cursor-rules-config includes a migration flow from the old format to the new one.
Q: I run Claude Code, Cursor and Codex on the same machine. Install skills three times?
A: No. manage-skills maintains a central skill library via skills-manager-cli - install once, then sync to Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI and other installed agents, with enable/disable and update support.
Q: npx installs keep timing out. Alternatives?
A: Try other hubs. skill-hub-united routes across clawhub.ai, skillhub.cn (optimized for mainland China) and skills.sh (npx skills, GitHub-based), handling name conflicts and license gating. For mainland networks, china-install-skills bypasses rate limits via direct API access.
Q: Can Deep Skill Finder install Cursor skills for me?
A: Yes. Tell your agent 'install a skill that does X' and it searches a 50,000+ skill library with recommendation reasons and one-click install commands. All 6 skills above have live-API download counts - verify any of them on meyo.life.
